Group Classes &
Workshops

While private lessons help us to hone our skills individually, playing in groups is the payoff. To help put our musical training into practice, I offer a variety of special workshops and group classes. The goal is to present an opportunity for students to explore new facets of musical expression and skill. Classes offered include a range of skill levels and are open to anyone interested.

Please note: group classes are formed by region.  Speak with Taryn to learn more about pricing and availability in your area.

1

Chamber Music/Rock Band

Who hasn’t dreamed of starting a band?  Here’s your chance!  Fun for all ages and ability levels.  Chamber groups/Bands are an opportunity to learn more of the skills required for ensemble playing, including strong rhythm, listening, and collaboration.  Groups are formed by region - students may bring an already-formed group, pending my approval.  Each group will then choose a style of music and, with my assistance, select several pieces that are appropriate for the skill level and age of its members.  All participants must take weekly private lessons from an instructor (not necessarily me) while involved in the chamber group/rock band.  Groups can meet long-term or be formed for a special event (i.e. talent show, party, work event, etc.)

2

Composition and Music Theory

Open to students in Faber level 3A and above - or with my approval.  Listen and begin to understand your unique musical style and taste.  Learn how to come up with composition ideas from scratch and expound upon them using a variety of compositional techniques.  Explore sights, sounds, colors, mood, and pace.  Understand the building blocks of melody and harmony in greater depth than ever before.  Group Classes will participate in a final peer review followed by a showcase of each composition - performed by professional musicians!

Note:  Composition/Songwriting is also available for private instruction.

3

Performance Workshop

Open to all ages and ability levels.  Performance workshop is an opportunity to practice performing, receive valuable feedback from a group of peers, and participate in discussion.  This workshop provides the framework for students to discuss a variety of topics surrounding performance including: what makes an excellent performance, how to prepare, how to address nerves/anxiety, how to keep the audience interested, how to have stage presence, how to be confident, and more.

4

Intro to Rhythm

Open to all ages, and especially aimed at beginners with little or no musical experience.  Intro to Rhythm explores the purpose and function of rhythm, and its important role as the heartbeat of music.  Learn about percussion, make your own instrument, learn simple rhythm notation and tempo, and talk about the way music is structured.

5

Intermediate and Advanced Rhythm

Open to all ages, anyone with 2+ years of musical experience.  (Faber Level 2B and above, or with approval by me).  We will explore complex rhythms as well as a variety of meters and mixed meters.
